Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has been plunged to the bottom of the Championship table with -6 points after officially entering administration. The EFL, the league’s governing body, immediately imposed a 12-point penalty for the insolvency event.
The decision to file for administration was made by owner Dejphon Chansiri, ending a turbulent reign. The club now faces an almost certain relegation battle, sitting 15 points adrift of safety. Administrator Begbies Traynor has been appointed to manage the club’s affairs.
The administrators are now in charge of selling the club’s assets, including the Hillsborough stadium, which is owned by a separate Chansiri company. The goal is to recoup significant debts, including an estimated £1 million owed in taxes to HMRC.
The financial situation had been dire for months, with players and staff failing to be paid on time in five of the past seven months. This instability led to the departure of former manager Danny Röhl and several key players over the summer, leaving the club to start the season with a threadbare squad.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, who remains in his post, described the situation as both “sad” and a “good day” because it provides a necessary “fresh restart.” He expressed hope that job losses could be prevented and, despite the massive points deficit, vowed the team would “keep fighting” to survive in the Championship.
