Erdoğan: Iran conflict’s tech impact threatens global economic stability

In a recent address following a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted the far-reaching repercussions of the Iran conflict, emphasizing that no nation is immune to the cascading effects of crises in today’s interconnected global landscape. Erdoğan noted that the economic and political tremors from the ongoing situation in Iran have reverberated across continents, manifesting as inflation, supply chain challenges, and instability in energy markets.

Erdoğan underscored the significance of globalization and economic interdependence, asserting that regional skirmishes now bear global implications. “When a country in the Middle East sneezes today, a country in Latin America or Asia can easily catch a cold,” he remarked, depicting the aftermath of the February 28 attacks on Iran as a complex crisis with worldwide impacts on stability. He cited ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices, rising inflation, and persistent bottlenecks in the Strait of Hormuz as indicators of growing global vulnerability.

Warning of the unpredictable scale of economic fallout, Erdoğan criticized what he described as a speculative system manipulated by a select group of capitalists. He accused these entities of profiteering from instability, enriching themselves at the expense of billions from Africa to Asia and the Americas. “Every war creates its own economy. Every war has its winners and losers. But with the Iran war, this has exceeded the limits of tolerance and reached destructive levels for global economic prosperity,” Erdoğan stated, highlighting the disproportionate impact on middle-and lower-income households facing diminishing purchasing power amid rising living costs.

Domestically, Erdoğan addressed unwarranted price hikes in Turkish markets, suggesting that some pricing practices go beyond mere production or transportation costs, despite Türkiye’s relatively low input costs, particularly in energy. He pledged that authorities would maintain vigilance against exploitative pricing strategies and urged businesses to aid in maintaining market stability and consumer protection.

In a broader international context, Erdoğan strongly condemned Israel’s actions against the Global Sumud Flotilla, labeling them as acts of “piracy” and “banditry” against those aboard the humanitarian mission. He asserted that such attacks would not deter the global community’s quest for justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people, underscoring his commitment to these principles.
