In a significant diplomatic engagement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened in Istanbul to discuss enhancing strategic cooperation between their nations. The high-level talks, held at Vahdettin Palace, revolved around expanding partnerships in several key areas, including trade, defense, energy, and infrastructure, as well as addressing regional security issues.
During their meeting, which included senior officials from both countries, the leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening economic relations. Currently, bilateral trade stands at approximately $1.2–1.35 billion, a figure they hope to increase significantly towards a long-term goal of $5 billion. Discussions touched upon boosting trade and investment, with particular interest in Turkish investments in Pakistan’s energy, agriculture, transport, and technology sectors.
Defense collaboration was another major theme of the talks. Erdoğan and Sharif explored avenues for enhancing military cooperation, which includes the exchange of military equipment, joint training programs, intelligence sharing, and future co-production projects. This reinforced the ongoing efforts of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, which plays a pivotal role in fostering multi-sectoral collaboration between the two nations.
The dialogue also delved into regional developments, with a focus on the Middle East, Afghanistan, and counter-terrorism efforts, reflecting the importance both countries place on maintaining regional stability. Enhancing digital connectivity and coordinating responses to shared challenges were highlighted as crucial areas for future cooperation.
