TOKYO – In a move that signals confidence in Japan’s domestic tourism market, Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. today unveiled plans for the Okura Resort Hakone Gora, marking the prestigious brand’s debut resort property on home soil.

Partnering with Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. through an agreement signed this past July, Hotel Okura is positioning itself to capture a share of Hakone Gora’s impressive 20 million annual visitors when the resort opens its doors in 2029.

The property promises to blend the region’s celebrated natural hot springs with Okura’s time-honored omotenashi service tradition. “We are committed to delivering our bespoke hospitality experience in a location that deeply embodies Japan’s profound heritage and natural splendor,” said Toshihiro Ogita, President of Hotel Okura, emphasizing the cultural resonance of the destination.

What sets this resort apart? Designer Gwenael Nicolas has crafted a “Forest Hideaway” concept featuring 58 guest rooms—each with its own private outdoor hot spring bath drawing from Owakudani’s thermal waters. Guests will also enjoy indoor bathing facilities, a teppanyaki restaurant, and an upscale bar lounge, creating what industry observers are calling an ambitious entry into Japan’s competitive resort market.
