According to Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree, the offensive was aimed at weapons storage and command centers at the Sharurah military base. Saudi civil defense reported that a projectile impacted near the Yemeni border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several structures.
In response, Yemeni government forces have intensified their own operations against Houthi targets. The military confirmed conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz area, focusing on Houthi positions and weapon sites near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. This escalation comes on the heels of a week-long Houthi campaign that saw their forces seize significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and several strategic islands, bolstering their hold near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the Red Sea’s southern entrance.
The Houthis have further announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Red Sea ports, heightening concerns over the stability of regional shipping lanes and energy supplies. This waterway has gained increased importance for Saudi oil exports due to ongoing disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. As tensions rise, Saudi Arabia continues its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis maintain their alignment with Iran, exacerbating regional instability.
This surge in conflict has precipitated a significant humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands being forced to flee their homes amid the renewed violence. Many displaced individuals are now struggling to secure shelter in safer areas. The United Nations has noted a marked increase in displacement since July, with reports indicating that the recent fighting has resulted in over 500 fatalities.
