Zelensky Says US Aims for June Resolution with Historic Miami Peace Talks

In a significant diplomatic development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that the United States wants to conclude the Russia-Ukraine war by June and has offered to host peace negotiations in Miami next week. This marks an unprecedented step in American efforts to mediate the conflict.

Zelensky made the disclosure in remarks to reporters that were publicized early Saturday. The Ukrainian president explained that US officials have communicated their intention “to do everything by June,” establishing a clear deadline for diplomatic efforts. The proposal to hold talks in Miami represents the first time Washington has offered American territory as neutral ground for direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.

These forthcoming Florida talks would build on two previous negotiating rounds facilitated by the US in Abu Dhabi since January. While those earlier sessions achieved a humanitarian breakthrough through a significant prisoner exchange, they failed to bridge the enormous gap on territorial issues. Russia maintains military control over approximately 20 percent of Ukrainian territory and is demanding recognition of these occupied zones plus additional territorial concessions in the Donetsk region as prerequisites for any peace agreement.

Ukraine has steadfastly refused to accept territorial losses, arguing that such concessions would legitimize aggression and undermine the principles of international law and sovereignty. Russian negotiators have insisted their territorial demands are fundamental and have indicated they are prepared to intensify military operations if diplomatic solutions do not meet their requirements. This territorial standoff has proven to be the most intractable obstacle in the path toward peace.

As diplomatic initiatives continue, so does the violence on the ground. Zelensky reported on Saturday that Russia had launched strikes against infrastructure vital to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations the night before. The attacks forced reductions in electricity generation at several nuclear facilities and triggered an automatic shutdown of one reactor unit. Zelensky characterized these strikes as unprecedented terrorism and called on Russia to prove its commitment to negotiations by ending attacks on essential civilian infrastructure.
