Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed optimism regarding future collaborations between Denmark and the United States on matters related to Greenland and the broader Arctic region. Following her attendance at the European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, Frederiksen emphasized the increasing pressures faced by Greenland and expressed gratitude towards European allies for their support.
Frederiksen highlighted Denmark’s desire to enhance its cooperation with the United States, particularly in the realms of security and defense, with a specific focus on Greenland. While a high-level working group is actively discussing these issues, Frederiksen noted that it remains too soon to draw definitive conclusions, although she is hopeful about achieving progress.
The summit also underscored the growing cooperation among European and transatlantic partners concerning Arctic security. This includes several allied countries conducting military exercises in Greenland, reflecting European nations’ increasing involvement in the strategic safeguarding of the region.
The European Arctic Summit, which took place on September 13-14, concentrated on establishing a unified European approach to the Arctic. This initiative comes as the region continues to gain significant strategic and geopolitical importance.
Greenland, known as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been the subject of interest from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly indicated a desire to bring it under US control. This interest has stirred tensions between Washington, Copenhagen, and other European allies, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Arctic.
