Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has raised an alarm over the rising power of social media algorithms, describing their influence as “algorithm fascism.” He argues that these algorithms increasingly blur the line between truth and misinformation, making it challenging for individuals to discern reality. Speaking at the Second Communication Council held in Ankara, Erdoğan highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and the challenges they pose in distinguishing facts from mere perception.

The president emphasized that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and communication technologies have revolutionized the way information is shared. However, he also warned that these developments have led to a surge in disinformation, affecting how people think and interpret events. According to Erdoğan, social media’s ability to reshape historical narratives can pose significant threats to cultural values and social cohesion.

Erdoğan outlined that the Communication Council aims to craft Türkiye’s future communication strategy by bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts. The event is focused on enhancing public communication policies to align with the country’s long-term vision, making it a cornerstone for strategic planning in communication.

During his address, Erdoğan also touched upon the ongoing investigation into the Ahbap charity. He stated that authorities are actively holding those accused of exploiting public trust accountable through legal processes, following the public’s response to the 2023 earthquakes. This investigation underscores the broader theme of accountability and trust in public institutions, which Erdoğan seeks to reinforce through these discussions.
