Türkiye is set to commence drilling for oil in the western Black Sea, marking another step in its ongoing efforts to bolster domestic oil and natural gas reserves. According to Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, the upcoming drilling endeavor will present significant technical challenges and is expected to require a considerable amount of time. Looking ahead, Türkiye plans to undertake six exploration wells throughout the Black Sea’s western, central, and eastern regions by 2026.
In recent years, Türkiye has significantly enhanced its offshore exploration capabilities, now boasting a fleet of six deep-water drilling vessels. Several of these vessels are currently engaged in exploration and development activities within the Black Sea. This expansion signifies the country’s commitment to increasing its energy production from local sources.
Türkiye aims to double its gas production from the Black Sea fields by the close of this year. The estimated gas reserves in the Black Sea have climbed to approximately 785 billion cubic meters, bolstered by multiple discoveries since 2020. At present, daily production is around 9.5 million cubic meters, which adequately meets the natural gas needs of about 4 million households. By 2028, the government anticipates that production will reach between 16 and 17 billion cubic meters annually.
This expansion in energy production is integral to Türkiye’s strategy to lessen reliance on imported energy and enhance domestic output. The country is also focusing on boosting its LNG infrastructure and strengthening pipeline connections, with aims to solidify its role as a regional energy transit hub. Additionally, Türkiye is exploring new routes that could facilitate the transportation of gas from the Middle East to European markets.
