Việt Nam and Denmark have taken a significant step in enhancing their bilateral relations by establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Announced during discussions in Copenhagen between Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, this agreement marks a new phase of cooperation as the two nations approach 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.

The partnership aims to bolster political ties and promote long-term collaboration across key economic and strategic sectors. Denmark now stands as the second European Union member to achieve such a partnership with Việt Nam. Central to this upgraded relationship are trade and investment, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of the EU–Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement. They aim to enhance market access and foster greater participation of businesses in international supply chains.

Denmark has shown a keen interest in expanding its investment in Việt Nam, particularly in high-tech and environmentally sustainable industries. Companies like LEGO, Maersk, and Vestas were acknowledged for their contributions, with Vietnamese leadership calling for more robust investment promotion and policy dialogue to turn these commitments into tangible projects.

Renewable energy and sustainable development are set to be major priorities under the new partnership. Denmark has committed to sharing its expertise and technology to assist Việt Nam in transitioning to cleaner energy, improving energy efficiency, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This includes support in mobilizing green finance and developing large-scale projects, especially in offshore wind power.

Moreover, both nations agreed to strengthen cooperation in science, technology, and digital transformation, focusing on areas like artificial intelligence and biotechnology. The partnership also aims to foster collaboration among universities, research institutions, and businesses, promoting skills development and professional training.

On the international stage, Tô Lâm and Frederiksen reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and international law, emphasizing cooperation through the United Nations and other forums. They stressed the importance of EU-ASEAN relations and Việt Nam’s readiness to aid in strengthening Denmark’s ties with ASEAN.

Concluding the talks, both leaders instructed relevant ministries and agencies to implement the partnership’s commitments, underscoring their dedication to translating this upgraded relationship into practical outcomes. Frederiksen also accepted an invitation to visit Việt Nam, reflecting the ongoing commitment to deepen the partnership across shared priorities.
