The expansion of U.S. military presence in Greenland is set to reshape security dynamics in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. A newly signed trilateral agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland will facilitate the establishment of new defense areas and a missile defense system on the island, enhancing its strategic significance.
Signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the agreement allows the U.S. to develop defense sites at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig in Greenland. It paves the way for a “Golden Dome” missile defense system, while also amending the 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense agreement. This change gives broader access for U.S. military aircraft and vessels across Greenland’s territorial waters, fortifying the island’s position as a key strategic location between North America and Europe.
Importantly, the agreement includes clauses that prevent non-NATO countries from establishing military installations on Greenland, reflecting concerns about foreign influence in the region. It also imposes restrictions on foreign investments, particularly in sensitive sectors such as critical infrastructure and resource extraction, underscoring a commitment to secure Greenland’s sovereignty and resources.
While the agreement does not transfer control of Greenland to the U.S., it does require approval by the relevant parliamentary bodies in Denmark and Greenland before it can be fully implemented. This aspect highlights Greenland’s self-governing status within the Kingdom of Denmark and its right to self-determination.
The deal follows a period of tension after former President Donald Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, citing its strategic value and security importance in the Arctic. The U.S. currently operates the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland, and the new agreement could mark the most significant expansion of American military infrastructure on the island since the Cold War.
